JnNURM Volvo Timings-Kochi/Cochin

I can’t count the times I have waited for one of the relatively new JnNURM AC Volvo buses plying in our city. I would wait long enough and unsure about actually seeing one and give up and step into one of the many private buses. I have seen the nice orange buses ply all around the city with the people smartly tucked inside the wide and open glasses of Volvos. But never have I gotten the opportunity to step into one of them. The AC Volvos are a common sight in Bangalore and is quite easy to get one as you just have to wait at one of their bus terminals or stops and you are bound to see one or two that will head in your direction. Where as in Kochi there is always an air of uncertainty on when or whether the bus will ever come by your bus stop.
Who knows the timings? No one, these buses just started plying one day without a proper system and notification of route. No offense to the people at the KSRTC who are doing a good job introducing these city buses which are nothing short of a boon for Kochiites, but where the heck are the timings?? Apparently is all neatly tucked away at their website for public access and heck we thought why not share to all our fellow Kochiites.
I sure want to know the timing of the next bus that will come by my area, wouldn’t you want to? So here they are people.

Polish your robotic skills Kochi/Cochin

Is this the future?

Is this the future?

Nexus, was an initiative that was given birth to during Techfest 2007, dedicated to foster and generate interest in robotics. Its not your basic training in creating T1000s and T8000s (refer the Terminator saga), more to get those brain cells to think out and beyond the box, far beyond the box. Nexus is basically held as a prelim level competition where three victors of fixed centers are selected to compete against the best of the best in India’s national robotics challenge. The challenge is usually held at the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay where participants go all out and unleash robotic supremacy. In this case its not the brawn of the robots ( refer robo-wars and other barbaric yet insanely fun shows) but the ‘brains’. Brains translate to how the robots can comprehend and get themselves across obstacles.
The breakdown of Nexus

The breakdown of Nexus

This year’s event, an even more challenging version of Nexus, ‘NaviGate’ is a subtle blend of mechanical and grid challenges. This year’s problem statement requires participants to make autonomous bots that traverses a grid to find a specific block and brings it back to the top of a ramp. These robots may come off as fun and the logic involved may be interesting and novel initiatives. But these technologies are later on use in military, archeological, space and other applications where robots are required to correctly identify and bring back and object. Today’s college science projects tomorrows multimillion dollars worth machines.

And you can see in the breakdown of the event that this doesn’t end at the national level, the winners head and compete against international teams, so you literally become national heroes.
This year’s Nexus will be held across the country from one tip to another. Here are the venues;

Central Zone: Medi-Caps Institute of Technology and Management, Indore (26th September, 2010)
South Zone: Model Engineering College, Kochi (26th September, 2010)
North Zone: Thapar University, Patiala (3rd October, 2010)
East Zone: Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, Bhubaneswar (3rd October, 2010)
West Zone: Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, Mumbai (10th October, 2010)

Wondering on how to prepare for the event? Don’t worry, a Nexus workshop will be conducted at these centers given below, you can give it a shot over there.
schedule

So get those thinking gears working, code the best logic, screw on those nuts and bolts on those modern marvels and win yourself accolades worthy of a hero! ( make sure your have a kill switch though, we don’t want doomsday to creep out of all this ;) )

Register for NaviGate here.

KUDS: One step closer to a developed Kochi

kuds

Kochi is growing, and nobody can deny that. Is this growth enough or do we need a more powerful thrust so that we can plunge ourselves out of this state of somber mediocrity? Progress implies radical thinking towards a positive note, it does not merely lie in the number of shopping malls or high rise buildings or the number of cars managing to maneuver around the city.

Our government and authorities have failed to prove themselves to be of little or any consequence, and without the presence of a strong body, there’s a heavy limit imposed on how much we as individuals can contribute. The Travancore Cochin literary, scientific and charitable societies registration act of 1955 has sustained various organizations like the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, the Kerala Folklore Akademi, the Kerala State Information Technology Mission etc; all of them proving to be a pivotal presence in the growth and development of a society striving to be greater than itself. Another such organization currently stealing the limelight is the Kerala Urban Development Society (KUDS), aimed at assisting various governmental and non governmental organizations like the KSEB, GCDA, PWD, Corporation of Cochin etc so as to guarantee the best of investments they put in for their urban developmental strategies. They deal with projects that revolve around City planning and design, Transportation designing, Heritage conservation, Pollution / carbon emission control etc.

If they do manage to overcome the usual hurdles that they are bound to face, here’s what Kochiites will be looking forward to : the much awaited wider roads, continuous power supply, multilevel car parking facilities, functioning traffic signal systems, dwellings for the middle and lower income classes, various community centers, heritage tourism promotion, climate control campaigns and meets, fund raisers and public auctions along with various seminars and town hall meetings on city developmental issues. In other words a better Kochi, by an unimaginably massive margin.

KASS
The Kochi Art and Science Space (KASS) is an educational initiative taken up by KUDS that ensures the creation of a science space museum and an important art space in Kochi. If delivered, this kind of exposure and reach could be a vital center of growth, particularly for students and budding intellects on whom the country’s future undoubtedly relies upon. Causes such as the KASS are the ones that are worthy of immense public backing and support.

AYPIC_Logo_05
The Association of Young and Progressive Indian Citizens(AYPIC), the youth wing of KUDS, is directed towards motivating the country’s biggest resource, its young population, to join hands and actively participate in this process of change. For this the AYPIC aims to imbue in certain visions among the youth that include Young, Dynamic and Progressive leadership, social equality, poverty eradication, stronger economy and voluntary service.

Growth is forever, and to be truly successful we have to push the limits beyond the skies. Every dream, every thought, every idea has the potential to transform itself into reality if we unite and put our minds to it, and individually do nothing less than the least we can.

Since KUDS being a non profitable organization, we can do our part and support them through donations or offering to volunteer or even enrolling as a member.

For AYPIC, membership is open to all Indian citizens in the age group of 10 to 45 for a nominal fees of Rs.150/- and USD 10/- for NRI’s (Renewal fees Rs.75 and USD 5 for NRI’s).

Paintball in Kochi finally!! @techKshetra Kochi-Cochin

Untitled-1

Cambridge Online Dictionary defines paintball as,
paintball noun
/ˈpeɪnt.bɔːl/US pronunciation symbol/-bɑːl/ n [U]
a game in which people dress up in military clothing, go out into the countryside and attempt to shoot each other with guns that fire paint rather than bullets

Urban Dictionary defines it as,
1. Paintball
one of the best sports ever made.
Paintball rules all .

I would say the latter is a more aptly defined expression! Paintball one of the few marveled sports that has been so rarely experienced by Malayalis; Correction, never have experienced. Before you start on me, I didn’t include the guys who live abroad,I am talking about us resident malayalis. I should maybe be more specific, paintball is a sport that has yet to grace God’s own Country. Well not for long. TechKshetra the tech fest hosted by Rajagiri School of Engineering and Technology is bringing Paintball as one of the prime events to Kochi and Kerala.

Now these are the basics of paintball. There are two opposing teams, they are armed with paintball markers ( a paintball gun!! ). These are loaded with pellets containing the paintballs. Now the aim is to eliminate members of the opposing side by ‘marking’ them with your markers. Wham! One hit and they are out. Generally this is played in an environment with artificial elements for cover, strategic positioning, etc. It can be indoors or outdoors. The more elaborate ones are held in forests to simulate a ‘battle field’ effect. Rules generally vary from capture the flag, elimination, scouting out an area successfully, defending an area. Military styled ones have rescue missions, ambushes, etc. Most terminologies and methodologies are based on military and gaming styles.

So if you want to experience the thrill of shooting up someone with paintballs, head to RSET.

Do you have the balls for it??!
