Today is World Environment Day, and Kochi is celebrating it too! June 5th is celebrated as Environment Day across the globe. The lack of trees and plants inside the city, and destroying the already living ones is posing a threat to Kochiites. Yes, we need trees and greens, and Kochi is short of it. Kochiites are running campaigns and walkathons to celebrate this day to support the greens. And everyone is doing their bit to make things better and greener in Kochi!
Four lakh saplings will be given away in Ernakulam district as part of the ‘Amma Bhoomikyu Oru Maram’ scheme of the government. This will be inaugurated by Excise Minister K. Babu. A walkathon by environmentalists was also conducted as part of the World Environment Day.
Young Kochi is ready with some smart initiatives to show their support towards having greens inside the city and not destroying the existing ones. ‘My City My Pride’ campaign launched by Kochi Corporation is catching up at a fast pace. Students have taken an oath as part of this campaign. More than one lakh students have taken the pledge that they shall keep the city clean and neat (with minimal plastic usage), and will abide to the scientific systems to minimize waste in the city premises.
Hopefully, young Kochi will strictly adhere to their oath. And let us hope for a neater, cleaner and greener Kochi in the coming years!
