The renovation of houses built under the One Lakh Housing Scheme is yet to take off in full steam in the district. About 1,624 houses spread over 40 grama panchayats in the district were identified for renovation under the scheme. Out of this work had been taken up only in the case of 242 houses of which renovation of 82 houses had been completed.
At a review meeting held recently, District Collector M. Beena had directed panchayat authorities concerned to intensify the works and to undertake the renovation works of the rest of the 1,006 houses without any more delay. The Housing Board had so far given Rs. 49.30 lakh under the scheme for panchayats which had applied in compliance with all the stipulated provisions. Many panchayats had been denied the assistance on account of not having applied in the proper manner. Dr. Beena recommended undertaking the works by utilising the panchayat funds as their share of assistance from the housing board would be received as when the applications were filed in the proper manner.
