Ah yes monsoon has descended upon us like….well how monsoon would usually does. Nothing beats sipping on a hot cuppa ‘chai’ and munching on some freshly prepared ‘vadas’. Whiling away your time and enjoying the slow drizzle or the fast downpour of the rain ( whichever be the situation). Sure paints a nice picture in your head, doesn’t it? Well hold that thought then, lets set aside the romantic notions of the Monsoon Fever and get a more cautious note in. Monsoon fever can be taken in the literal sense here, ’tis the season for water-bourne diseases and such to spiral to maniacal heights.

The monsoon can really wreck havoc upon you if you don’t address caution to your intake of food and water. When in doubt always follow the golden rule and just avoid such kind of food. Especially water, never have water from outside where its origin or appearance can be shady. If you are at home, just boil, don’t even think twice, BOIL. Avoid open, cut vegetables, fruits, etc where chances of infection laden bounties are very high.

We always have a tendency to gorge on food no matter what time of the season it is, but monsoon is when we should pay an ample amount of caution to our dietary actions. Junkfood and cold beverages can cause havoc for you in this cold weather. Cut down on such food, simplicity is the best so go for simple food like rotis, dal, etc. Not saying that you have to lead a Spartan life, just know when to stop. Vitamin C is a good thing to get inside your body at this horrendous time, the sour tasting foods can help you out in you time of needs, keep common colds at bay. Lemon teas, yogurts, naturally sour foods are really keen sources that will help fend off infections and fevers.

It always great to purge those bid bad toxins and keep your body fresh and clean. I am in no way insinuating that it is to cut you open and serve you on a platter, but it’s alway great to have detoxed system.

No matter what we are always bound to be caught on the hindfoot irrespective of the precautions we take. So keep some cures ready, Ginger teas can really help against colds. To help fend off colds and cough, have the following mix every morning, crush 6-7 leaves of tulsi and mint leaves, crush an inch of ginger and mix it with honey and give it a nice gulp.

There have been numerous cases reported of a notorious mafia terrifying the citizens of Kochi. The mafia finds it very rewarding to see the horrified expressions of the ‘scared-stiff’ victims and the joy of listening to them shouting out abuses at the top of their voices in frustration seems to be unexplainable. The mafia is composed of a bunch of young and jobless boys and girls and seems to be initiating more members into the gang lately. They are seen mostly in a golden Zen and white i20, and lately also seen in a white Punto. They are experts in the field and can almost immediately recognize the nationality of their ‘to-be victim’ from their faces and the snake warnings are given in their languages respectively. Their favourite targets are middle-aged and old men and women, and also the freakers in town wearing colourful apparels (and not to forget the bandanas and piercings, mostly on their brow).
One of their favourite incidents was when a newly initiated member tried her luck on a fat, middle-aged woman walking back home after loads of grocery shopping (PS-plastic bags in both hands). As soon as the snake alarm was given, the horrified woman lifted up her saree with both hands(without letting go of her plastic bags of course), preparing herself to run for dear life, and jumps very tactfully around a puddle of water and thought she managed to save herself from the deadly snake bite.
The mafia has made lives of the citizens miserable and people cannot walk around the city, safe and un-hoodwinked. A change of strategy by The Pambu Mafia is expected and thus Kochiland is warned of tremendous mental stress and torture in the coming days. So BEWARE Kochi…

Brazil is where Football is truly played with magic. The flicks, the step-overs, the fakes, no one does it better than the Brazilians in such numbers. Technical skill is something that is something that comes naturally to them. Five time winners and a true dominating force. With players like Luís Fabiano, Júlio César and Kaká brazil is sure to deliver thrilling and highly entertaining football. If they play their cards right, 2010 can be the year where they add a 6th to their kitty.

England the under-achievers where the game ironically has its modern roots from, with the first ever written evidence of a football match held as early as 1170. With only one World Cup to testify their prowess, England has ever failed since 1966 to win any further WC’s. Under Fabio Capello though England has put behind their miserable Euro 08 failures and marched solidly en-route to South Africa.

With their enigmatic powerhouse of a striker, one of the best in the world, Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney, has a whole nation’s hopes lie upon his shoulders.England has always had problems at the national level even having some of the best talents, largely due to the animosity through the ranks because of club differences.England can boast of one of the best Midfield pair in Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard. This can be their year.

Argentina is one of the most successful football teams in the world. Winning two World Cups in its history and having Diego Maradona one of World’s most legendary players who had lead them to their second successful WC as their current coach. Maradona is now managing the national team hoping to lead them to victory.It should be no mean feat considering the man’s track record and the resources he has at his disposal. Barcelona’s Lionel Messi has won all that can be won at a club, being the 2009 FIFA World Player of the Year, a mean scoring machine, the ball may seem glued to his feet. Sadly the only complaints against him is that he hasn’t been able to emulate his club form in the international stage. If he can find his bearings this year, along with the work-horse of player, Manchester City’s Carlos Tévez and Real Madrid’s hot striker Gonzalo Higuaín Argentina might be able to edge through.

Other hopeful contenders are Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Ivory Coast, France and Portugal.

India being a cricket nation may not share the same celebratory mood as the rest of the footballing nations, but several pockets of football fanatics exist across the nation, mostly around the east and south. Kerala is major football loving nation with north Kerala districts being major fanatics.

Our Kochi has a mad passion for the game, where each area within the city and its edges having its own football ‘club’ and lovers dedicated to a sect of international football. Fort Kochi is one of the places that Kochiites consider a major haven for footballers. But sadly this year’s World Cup is not met with the similar enthusiasm it used to get in the past. Although Football posters and cutouts adorn parts of the city and several public screening halls have been set up by local communities, the city largely does not share the same indulgence. It would have been wonderful to see the City Officials set up public screening forums as we have many open and large spaces for such activities (which otherwise acts hosts to religious meeting and political rallies).
A sport such as football which brings people together setting aside all social differences should actually be promoted in such times of low social harmony of want of social interaction with your fellow man. And unlike any other events, this is the World Cup, the pinnacle highest of all sporting and global events.

Don’t let that dampen your moods though, get some friends together, a couple of munchies and a few bottles of beer and viola!-World Cup ambiance and if anyone of you have a wide-screen LCD screens even better!

1)There are several hotels in the city offering live screening of the matches, with drinks and snacks at special World Cup rates. Try the Ava Lounge at Dream, the Le Meridian, the Gokulam Park Inn or the Renaissance Hotel. Your local community is bound to set up a public viewing area as it is common to see such initiatives from local neighborhoods.
2)If not why take up the initiative on your own, get along a few friends, set up a viewing area,spread the fever. Rivalry is fun, bashing each others team, cheering and shouting for yours, highlighting your team’s strengths and your rival’s team’s weakness’s, the fun never ends, but always remember to stick to the fun part and let it not edge over a particular ‘boiling’ point.
3)Add color to the festivities by getting flags and replica jersey’s of your favored nation, go search online for chants and songs (remember to do that in a crowd with people to sing along with, you don’t want to make a fool out of yourself either), wear clothes that resembles your national colors and so forth.

The more livid and whacky the ideas can get the more the fun it is, don’t let your environs hamper your ability to have fun, go ahead let the World Cup Fever get hold of you!

I would say the latter is a more aptly defined expression! Paintball one of the few marveled sports that has been so rarely experienced by Malayalis; Correction, never have experienced. Before you start on me, I didn’t include the guys who live abroad,I am talking about us resident malayalis. I should maybe be more specific, paintball is a sport that has yet to grace God’s own Country. Well not for long. TechKshetra the tech fest hosted by Rajagiri School of Engineering and Technology is bringing Paintball as one of the prime events to Kochi and Kerala.

Now these are the basics of paintball. There are two opposing teams, they are armed with paintball markers ( a paintball gun!! ). These are loaded with pellets containing the paintballs. Now the aim is to eliminate members of the opposing side by ‘marking’ them with your markers. Wham! One hit and they are out. Generally this is played in an environment with artificial elements for cover, strategic positioning, etc. It can be indoors or outdoors. The more elaborate ones are held in forests to simulate a ‘battle field’ effect. Rules generally vary from capture the flag, elimination, scouting out an area successfully, defending an area. Military styled ones have rescue missions, ambushes, etc. Most terminologies and methodologies are based on military and gaming styles.
