Diwali, this year too, is being planned to be celebrated in the best way. Kochi is all prepared to welcome Diwali. So along with sweets and colors, try celebrating Diwali with good music too. Diwali is commonly known as the ‘Festival of Lights’, but this festival is essentially a celebration of our inner light, the soul. In Hindu philosophy, awareness of the soul is supposed to outshine all darkness and dispel all ignorance.
Traditionally, Diwali marks the end of the harvest season in India. Farmers give thanks for the bounty of the previous year, and pray for a good harvest in the year to come. Some businessmen mark this as the end of a financial year. The blessings of the Godess Lakshmi, who symbolizes wealth and prosperity, are invoked for the year ahead.
Perhaps we in Kerala don’t celebrate it with as much gusto as our North Indian brothers do, but we can still light those diyas and wave those sparklers about!
