The Navy Queen Pageant is like Cochin’s own Lakme Fashion Week. Don’t smirk! In a state which is deprived of fashion shows and anyone who follows fashion religiously is either considered ridiculous or eve teased-upon, Navy Queen pageant comes as a whiff of fresh air. It definitely offers some solace to those souls who crave for some glamour and jazz. The newspapers in Kerala don’t exactly have a page 3 section. And if u ask me what page 3 is, I wouldn’t be one bit surprised. I would be quick to conclude that you indeed belong to Kerala, probably born, raised and spend almost a good part of your life here. And it is not everyone day that you see girls walking down in tank tops, halters or spaghettis. Even Miss Kerala pageants have always been frowned upon by moral police and pseudo feminists on how “un- malayali” (Is there even such a word? What the heck, if its not there, we create one) it is. So for such cochiites, Navy Ball is indeed a peek into the glamour world. It has been one of those rare occasions where the Malayali get to see attractive women sashaying in style. And it is here again to replenish the glamour-deprived Malayali soul. I know I know what you are thinking, “Cut the drama please”! Sure indeed, I say.
For the uninitiated, Navy Week is held annually to celebrate an important event in the history of our Nation. Around three decades ago, in the month of December, our navy ships launched an attack on the Karachi Harbour. Navy Ball, the grand finale of the Navy Week, is a reminder of our victory in the 1971 Indo-Pak war. Ever since its inauguration, Navy Ball has been considered as an important date in the social calendar of Cochin. And to add to the glitter and splendour, the event is attended by the who’s who of cochin. So Cochiites, wait with bated breath for this signature event of the year!
