Ifthikar Ali spins together for ‘Patchwork’

Music is passion for some. Music reigns the heart and ignites the senses, they say. Not merely a leisure pursuit or sideline, music plays the hero and is the canon for the so called ultimate music-lovers. So you think you possess the talent to sing? You are one amongst god’s favorites then, because not everyone possesses the musical bequest. Kochivibe presents before you a young musician who has been into not just singing, but composing music, production, and more. Ifthikar Ali. Does that name ring a bell? If you have been following Malayalam album songs (no no, not just the Santhosh Pandit or Silsila one’s alone), the one’s which are a class apart, Ifthikar Ali would be a name which you would be acquainted with. His album ‘Mantra’ which was released in 2003 was noticed, and was in the news for all the good reasons. He adds more of ‘desiness’ to his songs and you can hear more of Hindi and English from this 28 year old singer.

Maybe the name Ifthikar sounds too Hyderabadi or Delhiite-ish, but Ifthikar is a Malayali born and brought up in the much celebrated ‘god’s own country’. Ifthikar hails from Kasargod, and does not have the musical family history to boast about. Having done his multimedia course from an institute in Bangalore, and later having moved to Dubai to work, Ifthikar dropped his non-musical way of living to get back to music full-time. The best way he thought, was to be in Kochi. “I have been in Kochi for the past six months, and I came here so that I can work on my albums full-fledged from Kochi”, says Ifthi.

His first album ‘Dil Hai Deewana’ came out in the year 2000, when he was in class ten. “I did the album for the love of music. I never expected any profit out of that album”, adds Ifthikar. With his second album ‘Mantra’ making it quite big, Ifthikar realized that music is something which he cannot leave aside.

‘Patchwork’ is his next big venture. The album expects to make quite a big bang here, as the album features umpteen unique aspects which youngsters will be interested in. Out of the seventeen songs in the album, fourteen would be original ones, and the rest would be remixes. Featuring more than 40 technicians from across the globe, having recorded in 35 different studios across seven countries, and big names having worked for it, ‘Patchwork’ would be one of its kind. From Malaysia, Egypt, UAE, Holland, Canada, U.S.A, India and Pakistan, ‘Patchwork’ brings names from across the world together. “We started the work for Patchwork from 2009. And we expect to release the album by September end. The album is produced by a young man named Tony, and he is the one who gave me the idea for Patchwork”, says Ifthi. “We want to celebrate music, and we can ensure that there will be at least one song in the album that can please your ears. This is an assortment, and you can choose from it”, adds Ifthikar.

The album includes various languages- Tamil, Malayalam, Arabic and more. “We have a song where there is Carnatic music, Hindustani, Arabian rap, Tamil rap, and Hindustani Bhajan in one song, and this one would be the face of our album”, says Ifthi.

The virtual space has played hero here. “I haven’t met 90% of the people who have worked for this. It was all though social networking sites. We share things online, and that is one reason to why we took so long to release the album”, says this young man. You can also hear Anaita Nair, Andrea Jeremiah, Hamsika Iyer and more, having lend their voice for ‘Patchwork’. Patchwork is produced by Tune4 Music group and audio has been done on Oveo.

So what does Ifthikar Ali have to say to young Kochi? “I believe in music beyond language barriers, and that is why you can hear a blend in ‘Patchwork’. Kochi is a great place to be in. What I have not achieved in Dubai in my course of five years, was easily achieved in Kochi in a span of six months. This is a lovely city to be in”, says Ifthikar Ali. So let’s wait and see the magical charm that music from the much awaited ‘Patchwork’ can create. Interview with Ifthikar Ali – Music Composer and Producer

Kochivibe  is always on the lookout  for Talents who are making it BIG in life and one of the searches ended in Ifthikar Ali – a singer , music composer and producer.  At the age of 17 he launched his first musical album and then two years later he launched another musical album mantra. I caught up with “Ifthi” for a quick interview!

Musician Ifthikar Ali Photographs

1) Tell us something about yourself ?

I was born in Trikarpur in Kasargod District, Kerala and did 3 yrs diploma from Arena Multimedia Bangalore and was in Dubai from 2005-2009. I am now back in Bangalore and is the CEO of RightClick Interactive.

2) Somethign about Ifthi the talent musician

Self taught musician, composer, singer. Had training of harmonium (carnatic) for a month, but later stopped so that I can concentrate on piano and chords.

3) How early did you begin developing your music talents and the path taken?

I was 10  when I first started playing around with keys, a casio keyboard which I got as a birthday gift. First song that I composed was the prayer song  for Vidyathiraja School when I was in 9th grade.

4) What all instruments do u play?

Keyboard.

5) The Kind of music you like?

I love all kinds of music. I go by a rule ‘Sounding Good’. Anything that’s appealing to me. No definite description for that. Depends on the mood.

6) Tell us about the work you have done so far?

First album was Dil Hai Deewana, released in 2 districts. First professional project was malayalam album Mantra in 2003. Then an un-released project October, still sorting out the release issues. An International instrumental album ‘in-conceivable’ with a singaporean artist. One single ‘Show me love’ with canadian producer Moilim Yacoub aka MY.

7) It said the new comers are always asked for money to get a chance to sing in movies? Would u pay to get a chance to sing in a movie?

I have had offers like that. I haven’t done so far, I won’t be doing. I take music as a passion. I don’t need to invest in that to get recognized. For an artist, his talent is the investment.

8) Your take on Reality Shows (Singing)

It’s a good platform for the new comers. Hope the back end of such shows are genuine.

9) Your dream aspiration and role model?

AR Rahman :)

10) What is your recent project?

Right now working on a international album for a chennai/bangaore based company Tune4. Mix of instrumental, hindi and english. I have few other projects in the pipeline, but not clear as such to speak about.

11) Valentines Day is near do u have a valentine and what plans for valentines day?

Nope :) I’m working this valentines, travelling from friday to monday for an album project.

12) Your concept of Love? and Recommend Top Romantic Songs of your choice for Kochivibe readers!

If you think about the fantasy side, Love is something u cant live without… everyone in this world loves something or someone….. the heart skipping a beat or goosebumps, missing someone badly etc etc

Practical side, it’s how you adjust with someone…it is the level of understanding between two individuals and willingness to sacrifice small things in life. It’s about how well you share and care each other.

Love for me as a musician is a source of inspiration. Anything around the concept of love is a spark.

and my top pick of romantic songs would be

  • Manju Pole of the film Dost (All time fav – Malayalam),
  • Bole Sajni from Doli Sajake Rakhna (Sonu Nigam/ARR),
  • When you say nothing at all (Ronan Keating)
  • Right here waiting (Richard Marx)

You can catch Ifthikar in this facebook fanpage.
