Kochi witnessed yet another surprise recently. If you had been somewhere near the High Court junction, you wouldn’t have missed this. The van carrying (nearly) 4000 books reached Kochi a couple of days back. With books from various genres, the choices for book-lovers to choose from were many. According to the authorities, ‘fiction’, and books related to personality development were sought after the most. This ‘book van’ which was quite a major hit in places like Kakkanad, Aluva and Kaladi, found a halt in Kochi this week.
The section of books for kids was also interesting! Another appealing feature of this whole concept was that books were given at reasonable discounts. Books above 100 rupees could be availed at a discount of 10%, and books above 1000 rupees were given a discount of up to 20%. The fest is from 9.30 a.m to 8 p.m.
If you really want to check out this unique venture, and you were late, hurry to North Paravur. Their next halt is there!

Few might debate on the best place to offer greatest of dosas in Kochi; but for me its Pai Brothers hands down. I have traveled in India to an extent and am yet to come across a place which can boast of having 57 varieties of dosas on their menu! I won’t be surprised if they introduce newer dosas in the time to come.
Tucked in a small street perpendicular to MG Road is the fast food dosa joint run by the Pai brothers from Udipi who migrated to Kochi two decades back. It’s a sight in itself to watch them dole out the batter on the large hot plates and swirl the batter around with the back of the ladle sprinkling generous amount of oil to get thin and crispy dosas. I have tried many of the varieties here but my favorite would be Egg masala dosa, ghee roast, Leaf dosa, Lehsooni dosa (with garlic paste) and Podi dosa (dosa with gun powder – don’t worry absolutely harmless
Gunpowder is basically made from roasted lentils and red chillies and goes well with idli and dosas). Vegetable lovers should try Kancheepuram dosa with carrots and beetroot shavings as filling. Each of these dosas is exclusive offering unique tastes.
What started as a business on a pushcart is a full fledged restaurant frequented by the locals. Pai Brothers is open from 5:30 in the evening till 2 in the morning. It is one place you can head to after a late night movie. They have outlets in Palarivattom and Kakkanad as well. They had an outlet in Dubai which unfortunately they had to close down due to lack of team members to man the operations. One can read about their success stories in the news clippings pasted on to the walls of the outlet. They are quite popular in Kochi and guess what? Not only do they have the street (where they are located) named after them but also a movie called “Pai brothers”!!
If you are in Kochi do get your hands on the delectable dosa at Pai Brothers!
