1. So when did you start taking up DJ’ing as a profession?

I started DJ’ing in 2000! I used to play at formula one initially. And now, it’s been almost 12 years. I used to play at Longevity and Tandav at the same time. Once I finish my play at Longevity at 12 a.m, I used to hurry to Tandav. I joined in ‘Hotel Dream’ in 2009. And now I play in Qube since 2010. I love every bit of what I’am doing.
2. Don’t you think youngsters these days (most of them) are choosing DJ for the glitz factor?
Yes, of course! There are many. But what I would say is, do not chase the limelight because that really would not help. You should be here for the love of music. And you need to work quite hard for it. It’s not easy. I would say ‘patience’ plays a pivotal, indispensable role. You need this when you are a DJ. And moreover you need to make sure that you do not confine your options and love to just one genre alone. Try and experiment various genres. The more you explore, the more you get exposed. Another thing, know your roots i.e. listen to classic songs, rock etc. also.
3. So haven’t you ever felt that being a professional DJ is quite a risky job?
For me, DJ’ing started as a hobby. I was never serious about this. It gradually turned out to be my passion. And now the passion has taken a higher level. Yes, I’am a professional DJ now.
4. How do you see the current party scene in Kochi?
Kochi party scene has progressed a lot. People now know what they are supposed to do and what not. I think that is actually very good, as there is an etiquette attached to parties now.
5. Don’t you think stereotype of partying and party-goers still exists in our society?
Of course it does! Parents still have a problem with their sons and daughters going for parties. But you cannot blame them because the image of parties ain’t that great. Thanks to some movies that plays a humongous role in imbibing this view into their minds. I won’t’ say they impart only the negatives. Moreover, it’s just been a decade since hard-core partying scene started in Kochi. So people have to get used to it.
6. How’s your DJ class going?
It’s great. I don’t believe in marketing, hence many people do not know that I run classes. I don’t commit to anyone who comes by and asks me to be their teacher. I make sure that the person has absolute passion and love for music. I talk to their parents and make sure that it’s all fine. I prefer people who are done with their studies, at least a UG because music is a web, once you fall for it, there is no going back. That is something good.
7. Do you update music every week?
Yes, I do. Every week I download tracks. I listen to a 100 songs, and then choose some 15-20 songs from them.
8. Kochi has been witnessing a lot of youngsters taking up DJ’ing. What do you think of this scenario?
The noisier, the better they think.
9. What do you have to say all the aspiring DJ’s out there?
Be good to your customers. Play good music, not noise.
10. So what do you have to say to our Kochivibe readers?
