The Thripunithura Rajanagari Union of Residents’ Association, (TRURA) an apex council of residents’ associations in Thripunithura Municipality, aims to have a re-look at the city from the point of view of its heritage, cultural aura and development that is needed to make the town more habitable.Owning to the haphazard growth of the town, the residents have come out with an action plan in 15 phases that addresses most of the issues in the town.
The action plan prepared with expert help has five major points. Beginning with a master plan implementation, it covers transportation network and future plan, preservation of heritage, eco-friendly development and collecting data and its documentation.
The ambitious action plan starts with the road network to be replanned. Along with that the Action Plan II talks of making the streets and footpaths pedestrian-friendly. In the third action plan, the Apex council talks of a transportation hub combining railway station with bus station and a new rail link from Kalamassery to Thripunithura. Protecting and reusing heritage structures like palaces, abandoned buildings come under Action Plan IV and Plan V involves beautifying the monuments like the Statue junction, Clock Tower, Hill Palace and the Main Street. Plan VI is about upgrading Hill Palace by organizing cultural shows and having a Light and Sound show and Laser show. Further action plans talk about desilting of Andhakara Canal, landscaping, developing water front areas, public parks, recreation, developing Pooja Cricket Ground, converting the Boys School into a new Sports School, having public toilets, solid waste management system and even using vacant plots for organic cultivation.
