The Kochi Slang – From The Eyes of an Observer – Chapter 1

I was walking on the streets in Broadway , the first ever commercial street in Kochi, I was really surprised the way certain people were dressed. Well i decided to sip some tea, and just to hear what they talk, stood near them. It was really interesting to note that every conversation they started started with a “dhillee avan angadu ponenu” (dhillee hes going there) , “dhillee njan ponenuketta (dhillee i am going). I decided to call them with respect “DHILLAN”.The way these gentlemen were dressed also was totally cute. Pointed jeans like how ladies wear with really low waist showing their not so pleasing Jockey underwear. (Apparently , an insider told me that its just the bands they wear). Well the jeans was that, and the footwear was something like really bright (red, yellow , green) sneakers or Chappals.I was curious to know were they shop from and I went into one of the shops in esplanade and he mentioned the style which would make me a “Dhillan” was called comfort style !  Ooh now that’s a name :)

Well i decided the comfort style was definitely not what i would be comfortable in and hence moved on and called it a day. Interesting enough , there I was standing with a group of friends when someone said “SCENE CONTRA” and everyone asked with great concern , “what happened what happened ?”  Well what had happened was the dude was getting a call from home. Upon further discussion, it was found that Scene Contra is now a common term to describe a situation that is like err.. Contra..Well that’s the best i can put it ! The scene word was really popular as the malayalam version of “wassap man” went like “enthuuu sceenee annu maan?” ! also mixing scene in front of weird words was funny and catchy !  :D Things that i really liked was Scene Turbo – Something really cool and wild.  Scene Contra , and this one is crazy ! , Scene Vettayadu velayadu ! – Which means the guy is trying to woo women ! Well definitely these words are really fun and will soon be common among everyone within no time. The observations are genuinely interesting. More coming your way :D

Until then,  Scene Vettayadu Velayadu from me :)

Hey rada, i am a professional writer myself…i read ur article..its got some new stuff and a different feel to it. But frankly it needed more editing. Lack of editing and lack of creative usage is very much visible in the article. Im sure with time you will improve. There is a spark in your writing and you just need to view writing as a passionate but serious work if you want to make it to the top league. Keep up the good job anyways.

  26. avatar Rada says:

    Hey Anon,

Thank you for the wonderful response. :) Well, your spot on with your analysis. This is my first time trying my luck with the writing part. I usually keep what I write private. Definitely looking forward to reading your work too :) . I would really appreciate it if you can provide me the links for the same.

    Cheers ! :)

  35. avatar Kalpana says:

    Hi Rada,

    That was awesome…. !!
And i guess the word ‘Kaboor’, as mentioned by one of ur friend Shabib is also one of the slang used by cochin people.
The Other one i observed is ‘Ettindey pani kittum macha’.. it sounded funny when i heard from some school student , probably 5th or 6th standard in the Bus.. ;)

Keep going Rada… Its interesting :)

  36. avatar Rada says:
